Fibre cement shingle roofing can hold its integrity fo up to 25 years while asphalt shingle roofing will protect your home for a solid 20 years.

How to Know You Require a Roof Replacement

If you find yourself repetitively completing maintenance on your roof or notice that it looks old and worn in spite of repair it may be time to consider a replacement. A roof can naturally reach the end of its use even without experiencing roof failure. However, if replacing an old roof is delayed you may run into more serious issues later on. Below is a list of warning signs that indicate a replacement service may be required.

Our Process

By understanding the roofing process you will then be able to make advised decisions when hiring your roofing contractor as well as have a better understanding of common industry jargon. A typical roofing job of moderate size may take roughly three to four days to complete. Below is a short summary of what sort of roofing process you can expect to be completed by our roofing team at Boss Renovations.

Shingle Removal

First, we will remove all shingles and deposit them into a roll-off dumpster. Boss Renovations takes careful consideration of your property’s planting and shrubbery by laying down tarps and using magnetic tools to pick up any fallen nails or metal objects from your lawn.

Ice Dam Installation

We will then examine the roof base and do any repairs where necessary. This is followed by the installation of an ice dam, a synthetic waterproof barrier material designed to prevent melting ice from backing up under the shingles, where necessary.

Asphalt Roofing Paper Installation

This is followed by applying asphalt roofing paper over the roof sheathing creating an inner barrier that stops water from penetrating the house. This is normally tacked or stapled in place.

Metal Drip Edging

After roof sheathing is completed we apply metal drip edging around the edges of your roof for both the eave sides as well as gable sides. This is then nailed in place over the roofing paper or ice guard. If it is necessary we then apply new valley flashing which is typically nailed to the roofing deck then sealed with roofing caulk.

Application of Shingles

We then apply the shingle tabs beginning at the eaves and working up to the peak of the roof. This is followed by the application of flashing around all light leak areas around the house. This could include a focus on the chimney, skylights, or any other appropriate areas.

Ridge Vent Application

This is then proceeded by the installation of a ridge vent. This helps to enable air circulation to the attic space and is an important element in exhausting hot air as well as preventing winter ice dams. On older roofs, this system may not be included but may be a good thing to have installed during your new roofing venture. If the application of a ridge vent is not achievable there are other alternatives such as gable vents which can also provide air circulation.

Site Cleanup

After your new roof has been installed we then take meticulous time and care in our final clean-up of your home’s exterior. This is followed by a roof inspection and approval from a building inspector.

Our Material Options

How do you know what type of roofing material will best suit your roof’s needs? While Vinyl shingles are a common option in Calgary Alberta there are an array of options to choose from. Your roofing contractor will be able to advise you on the most appropriate material for your specific roof requirements. However, for your reference, we’ve included a list below of the most common roofing material options.

Asphalt composition shingles

This considered the most popular and easily accessible type of roofing material. While this product comes in at a more economical price point they are also less attractive because of their flat appearance.

Wood shakes or shingles

This material is considered to be a very attractive option though it does come in at a higher price point. You may not want to buy into this option if you live in an area that prone to fire danger.

Metal Roofing

Compromised of steel or aluminum this roofing type has increased in popularity over the years due to its fireproof nature as well as being highly durable. This material comes in at a higher price point but may be more cost-effective long term because of its long life span.

Slate roofing

Slate roofing is a highly attractive roofing option that typically comes at a very high price point. This roofing material is extremely heavy and may be difficult to repair when damaged because the tiles are very smooth and slick, making it difficult to walk on.

Composition slate

Similar in appearance to slate roofing this roofing type is comprised of 95 percent recycled materials and rubber. This option is much lighter than slate and is less susceptible to damage.

Clay or ceramic tile

This Spanish-inspired red tile is common in warm areas such as Florida and California. Though it is still common it has been gradually replaced by metal and composite materials inspired by its Spanish appearance.

Cost Considerations

Factors such as the age of your roof, material cost, the steepness of your roof, as well as overall square footage can all play a role in the budget of your project. Typically for a small to medium size roof replacement using architectural asphalt shingles you can expect a cost of around $7000, this includes demolition, permit fees, waste disposal, and property cleanup. Below is a shorthand list of price points to expect considering both roof age as well as materials.
